On my solo trip to Italy in 2018 I decided to branch out beyond some of the places I had seen before on previous adventures and while researching spots along the Rome to Florence train route I discovered Orvieto. An 800 year old town (!!!) perched on top of a rock formation in the middle of a gorgeous valley. Hundreds of years ago the sheer cliffs and fortress walls kept the town safe. In more recent years, the residents have slowly resettled their homes in the valley below the original town of Orvieto, but the charm and history of its origins remain. My AirBNB was two blocks from the 14th century duomo, I watched the sunsets from the edge of the bluffs overlooking an incredible view, and I noticed that it seemed all the locals knew each other - so much waving and friendly greeting in the streets. Businesses closed by 6 or 7pm with restaurants reopening after that for long, pleasant dinners on the quiet streets. This town shot to the top of the list of my favorite places I’ve ever been and I cannot wait to go back. My favorite film shots from my two night stay in Orvieto are below.
Thank you to Goodman Film Lab for the wonderful film scans. Shot with a variety of films on a Hasselblad 501c, Pentax 67ii and Contax T2.
