Orvieto, Italy on Film

Drag me!

On my solo trip to Italy in 2018 I decided to branch out beyond some of the places I had seen before on previous adventures and while researching spots along the Rome to Florence train route I discovered Orvieto. An 800 year old town (!!!) perched on top of a rock formation in the middle of a gorgeous valley. Hundreds of years ago the sheer cliffs and fortress walls kept the town safe. In more recent years, the residents have slowly resettled their homes in the valley below the original town of Orvieto, but the charm and history of its origins remain. My AirBNB was two blocks from the 14th century duomo, I watched the sunsets from the edge of the bluffs overlooking an incredible view, and I noticed that it seemed all the locals knew each other – so much waving and friendly greeting in the streets. Businesses closed by 6 or 7pm with restaurants reopening after that for long, pleasant dinners on the quiet streets. This town shot to the top of the list of my favorite places I’ve ever been and I cannot wait to go back. My favorite film shots from my two night stay in Orvieto are below.

Thank you to Goodman Film Lab for the wonderful film scans. Shot with a variety of films on a Hasselblad 501c, Pentax 67ii and Contax T2.

ready to tell your story?

Hi, I’m alex! A seattle wedding photographer who’s been documenting your stories since 2009.

I fell in love with photography almost 20 years ago in a darkroom class, and that love has never faded. What started as a darkroom class in college turned into photographing my first wedding solo in 2010,and I was hooked. The joy. The emotion. The vows. The details. The people.

I realized quickly that my fulfillment came from helping people see themselves in a beautiful, honest way. I move calmly. I guide confidently. I know how to capture all the angles and candid moments without you even noticing. My couples often say I have “photo superpowers” because of how much I capture while still keeping everything feeling easy and low-pressure.

Some photographers find wedding days chaotic.

I find them electric.
