Maui Volcano Anniversary Photography at Haleakala National Park

Drag me!

Maui is one of my favorite places in the world for engagement sessions and portrait photography.

There is so much besides pretty beaches. Maui’s got waterfalls, jungles, dramatic cliff sides, lava fields and one of the coolest places ever – Haleakala National Park. I’ve been to Haleakala National Park several times, so on a recent trip to Hawaii I was committed to planning a gorgeous portrait session at the summit of the volcano at sunset. I was put in contact with Mitch and Megan through a friend of a friend and discovered they’d be on the island at the same time as me and they were excited to do an anniversary portrait session!

This dove grey dress from Show Me Your Mumu was a perfect dress for a portrait session and to compliment Maui’s gorgeous landscape.

First and Bloom, a Seattle florist and good friend of mine, was also on the island at the same time and put together this fun bouquet for us!

Jessica Waite, one of the best makeup artists on Maui, did gorgeous hair and makeup for Megan.

We had fabulous plans to watch the sunset from the summit and do the majority of our photos there but on the day of our shoot it was foggy and rainy! Thanks to a vendor team and brave couple we charged on and made the most of this weather. The summit of Haleakala was socked in with fog and was freeeeeezing so after some photos we descended down below the clouds to a point that we could see a gorgeous view of the West Maui Mountains. It was in some of these little roadside nooks and crannies that we got gorgeous images of the mountains as sunset was occurring beyond all the grey clouds. Despite the weather not working in our favor, this day wound up being so fulfilling and fun, I am grateful for working with a couple that was up for braving the cold and wind at the summit, and am so thankful for vendors that came together to contribute to this shoot!

Thank you to these wonderful vendors:

ready to tell your story?

Hi, I’m alex! A seattle wedding photographer who’s been documenting your stories since 2009.

I fell in love with photography almost 20 years ago in a darkroom class, and that love has never faded. What started as a darkroom class in college turned into photographing my first wedding solo in 2010,and I was hooked. The joy. The emotion. The vows. The details. The people.

I realized quickly that my fulfillment came from helping people see themselves in a beautiful, honest way. I move calmly. I guide confidently. I know how to capture all the angles and candid moments without you even noticing. My couples often say I have “photo superpowers” because of how much I capture while still keeping everything feeling easy and low-pressure.

Some photographers find wedding days chaotic.

I find them electric.
