I don’t know how a year managed to go by in such a flash. Our baby boy, Henry, is one year old.
But he’s not really a baby anymore – he’s a toddler. A kid. Growing up so darn fast.
Starting on his one month birthday I made it a goal to take him to my studio each month to photograph him. We don’t have milestone blankets or letter boards in our house to pose him with. Instead, my goal was to photograph glimpses of his personality as he changed and grew every month. While we had to switch to using our home for the last couple of months due to Covid-19 this series of photos is no doubt one of the most important projects I’ve ever committed to. We’ll keep going for sure, documenting this wiggle worm as he grows and grows and grows. If you’ve followed me on Instagram you’ve seen Henry in my stories non-stop and seen him pop up in my regular feed now and then. I couldn’t resist putting together a blog post of my favorite photos from his monthly birthday sessions as we celebrate his first birthday on May the Fourth!

Thank you to my sister, Danielle Giles, for finding this awesome location filled with “Henry” murals in Seattle and for documenting moments from Henry’s first hours earth side with us (black and white photos after delivery are credited to her).
Committing to projects like this can be tough. It takes a lot of time but if you’ve thought of doing something like this for your kiddos I can promise you it’s worth it. Kiddos are only this tiny once and I say go crazy with documenting every stage of their lives. Remember to print the photos you take and hold tangible keepsakes in your hands. Don’t let your images die as jpegs on a computer hard drive. Create an album or scrapbook or anything that you can show your little one when they’re old enough to be interested. Be present in every moment possible and take lots of photos along the way.
